When the crew of the starship U.S.S. Voyager discover one of their long range sensor probes has been captured by
a Borg Cube, they come to the frightening realization that the inevitable has arrived... they are about to enter
the very heart of Borg territory. Captain Janeway is faced with a difficult decision which she knew would one day
come. She must decide if the risk of going ahead into Borg territory is too great, or should she turn back and
search for another way home.
Luckily, information obtained from the probe before it was destroyed reveals that there may be a way to traverse
the Borg space. There is a narrow region which appears to be devoid of Borg activity. Calling this region the “Northwest
Passage”, the crew sets course and prepares for their inevitable confrontation with the Borg.
In sickbay, while the Holographic Doctor studies the Borg nanotechnology that is used in the assimilation process,
Kes has a frightening premonition. She sees dozens of dead Borg onboard a doomed cube ship, and also sees that
the entire crew of Voyager will soon die.
At that moment, a Borg armada of 15 cube ships appears behind Voyager, but rush by the ship seemingly uninterested
in their presence. Curious as to why the Borg armada was in such a hurry, Captain Janeway orders that they follow
the Borg fleet to investigate.
Contact with the Borg fleet is lost, and when they arrive at the last known coordinates of the Borg armada, they
discover that the fleet has been destroyed. This brings about a terrifying revelation... there is someone out there
more powerful than the Borg. The crew discovers that there is a small organic craft of some kind attached to one
of the wrecked Borg cubes, and Captain Janeway orders an Away Team aboard it to investigate.
Commander Chakotay leads the Away Team through the devastated cube, and they soon find the entrance to the organic
ship. Tuvok and Chakotay investigate the small craft, while Ensign Kim remains behind to access a Borg distribution
node to download their tactical database.
The Away Team soon encounters the pilot of the organic ship, and Ensign Kim is attacked and wounded before they
can be beamed back to Voyager. In sickbay, the Doctor informs the Captain that Ensign Kim has been infected by
the alien virus and that he is in essence being eaten alive from the inside out. The Doctor discovers that this
is why the Borg have not been able to assimilate this alien species... their immune system is powerful enough to
fight off the Borg assimilation nanites before they can work. The Doctor does feel that it is the Borg assimilation
technology which could save Ensign Kim, so the he begins to construct modified Borg assimilation nanites that will
save him.
Meanwhile, the information from the Borg tactical database is analyzed and the crew finds some disturbing information;
the “Northwest Passage” is devoid of Borg activity for a good reason... it is filled with these new alien species.
They find that the Borg have designated these aliens “Species 8472”, and the Borg have been attacked by them over
the past 5 months. Each time, the Borg have been swiftly destroyed. The aliens appear to come from another dimension
through a quantum singularity in space and that they are beginning an invasion. Further premonitions from Kes reveal
that they are telepathic in nature, and that their intent is to destroy everything, communicating to Kes that “the
weak shall perish”. Obviously, the “Northwest Passage” is no longer an option for the crew.
Now faced with an even more difficult situation, Captain Janeway decides to make a deal with the devil. To her
disapproving crew, Janeway orders that Voyager seek out the nearest Borg vessel and that they will give the Borg
the information the Doctor has developed to defeat the alien species in exchange for safe passage through Borg
space. Voyager finds a Borg cube in a nearby system, and Captain Janeway poses her offer to the Borg Collective.
Beamed aboard the cube, Janeway states her demands. At that moment, species 8472 begins an attack on the system,
completely obliterating the planet that Voyager and the Borg Cube were in orbit of. The cube narrowly escapes with
Voyager in tow.
Barely escaping the attack, Captain Janeway informs her crew that she has reached an agreement with the Borg Collective,
who are willing to cooperate with their demands. Lieutenant Tuvok beams aboard the Borg Cube to assist Captain
Janeway in working with the Borg to develop a biogenic weapon which will defeat Species 8472. While aboard the
cube, the Borg attempt to link Janeway and Tuvok to the Collective with neural transmitters, but Captain Janeway
refuses and asks that the Borg choose a single representative for them to work with, like the Borg had done when
Captain Jean Luc Picard was assimilated into Locutus. The Borg agree, and Seven of Nine is chosen to represent
the Borg in their efforts.
Back aboard Voyager, the Doctor is successful in re-programming the Borg assimilation nanites to remove the alien
DNA from Ensign Harry Kim, who is restored back to normal. Meanwhile, Kes begins to have visions of Species 8472
watching over them. The Borg cube is attacked and Captain Janeway is critically injured in the assault. The Borg
sacrifice their cube to destroy the attacking bio-ship, transporting themselves over to Cargo Bay 2 aboard Voyager.
The internal struggle between Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay grows as she lay helpless in sick bay, and
Chakotay is given command. Chakotay decides to change the agreement with the Borg, and states that he will drop
them off at the nearest habitable planet and give them the modified nanite technology. The Borg do not agree, and
with their numbers dwindling to attacks from Species 8472, attempt to gain control of Voyager. Chakotay is forced
to depressurize the cargo bay, blasting the Borg into space. But Seven of Nine survived, and opens a quantum singularity
to the realm of Species 8472, sending Voyager into it.
Voyager arrives in the fluidic space of Species 8472, and Chakotay discovers that it was the Borg who began this
conflict when they attempted to assimilate Species 8472. The Borg reveal that they wanted Species 8472 because
they were the perfect blend of a biological and technological species and would greatly add to their own perfection.
Voyager is given little choice but to fight Species 8472 in their own realm, and in an attack Voyager uses the
new biogenic weapon. The weapon proves successful, and Seven of Nine returns the ship back to their own space.
Voyager is attacked once again, and uses one of the high yield weapons against Species 8472. Realizing that they
have lost the conflict, Species 8472 return to their own space.
With the aliens defeated, the Borg terminate their alliance with Voyager, and Seven of Nine attempts to take control
of the ship. Commander Chakotay is able to sever her link to the Collective, utilizing one of their own neural
transmitters against her. Now severed from the Collective, Captain Janeway decides to allow Seven of Nine to remain
onboard, offering her the one thing which the Collective could not... friendship.
