Note
Citazioni
Sisko: We need a Community Leader, and it's going to be... you, Quark!
Quark: Ahahahah... Community Leader! Ahahahah...
Odo: Seems reasonable: you have all the character reference of a politician.
O'Brien: Computer, transfer energy from the inertial dampers to reinforce the subspace field.
Computer: Procedure is not recommended.
O'Brien: Damn it transfer the energy!
Computer: Unable to comply. Level 1 safety protocols have cancelled the request.
O'Brien: Cancelled?
Computer: Warning: subspace field collapse in 30 seconds.
[...]
O'Brien: Computer, you and I need to have a little talk...
Sisko: In a linear existence, we can't go back to the past to get something we've left behind, so it's lost.
Alien: It's inconceivable that any species could exist in such a manner: you are deceiving us.
Alien: You value your ignorance of what is to come?
Sisko: That may be the most important thing to understand about humans. It is the unknown that defines our existence.
Kira: Shields Up!
O'Brien: What shields?
Kira: If you don't take that hand off my hip, you'll never be able to raise a glass with it again.
Quark: Ohhh... I love women in an uniform.

Three years since the devastating attack on the Federation fleet at Wolf 359 by the Borg, a reluctant Commander
Benjamin Sisko and his even more reluctant son are transferred to the newly acquired space station Deep Space Nine
in orbit of the Bajoran homeworld. Commander Sisko is ordered to oversee the repair of the giant space station,
which was constructed by the Cardassian Empire during their military occupation of Bajor.
The Starship Enterprise is docked at Deep Space Nine, and Commander Sisko has a tense meeting with Captain Jean-Luc
Picard, whom he blames for the death of his wife at Wolf 359. Picard informs Sisko that his mission aboard the
space station is a critical one, and that he is to assure the Bajorans are accepted into the Federation. After
the tense confrontation, the two part on less than friendly terms. Sisko looks to Major Kira, his Bajoran First
Officer for insight into the Bajorans. She explains that his only chance for success is for the Bajorans to unite.
She suggests that he seek out Kai Opaka, the Bajoran spiritual leader. She says that only Opaka could unite the
Bajoran factions who have resumed old arguments now that the Cardassian occupation is over and Sisko departs for
the Bajoran homeworld to find her. Upon meeting her, Kai Opaka reveals to Sisko that his arrival has a deep spiritual
purpose to her people, but will not reveal exactly what it is. She gives Sisko a powerful and mystical orb, relating
to him that his destiny is to retrieve eight other orbs which were stolen by the Cardassians. In a demonstration
of the orb's power, Kai Opaka is able to transport Sisko back to the beach where he first met his wife many years
ago.
The Enterprise disembarks and a Cardassian warship soon arrives at the station. The Cardassian leader, Gul Dukat,
immediately tries to convince Sisko to relinquish the orb, but Sisko denies any knowledge of it or other orbs.
Later, Dax researches the orbs' history and informs Sisko that they all appeared to origniate in the nearby Denorios
belt.
Dax and Sisko set out to investigate the Denorios belt in a Runabout. Upon their arrival, they are propelled through
a giant cosmic event... they have discovered a wormhole. The Runabout exits out of the wormhole and into what they
soon realize is the Gamma Quadrant, over 70,000 light years from Bajor. Realizing this may be the manner in which
the orbs appeared over Bajor, Sisko and Dax enter the wormhole to return home. However, they land on a remote planet
inside the Wormhole where an orb attacks Dax and transports her back to Deep Space Nine.
Left alone on the strange planet, Sisko is contacted by the alien beings behind the orbs, and who first perceive
him as a deadly threat. The aliens do not understand how lifeforms can exist in linear time, and use images from
Sisko’s life, including the day he met his wife and the battle where she was killed. Sisko is able to successfully
communicate with the aliens, and they soon begin to understand each other.
Chief O'Brien begins the seemingly impossible task of maneuvering the space station to the mouth of the wormhole,
but a Cardassian ship reaches it first. However, the wormhole collapses around the Cardassian ship, stranding it
in the Gamma Quadrant. The aliens detect the Cardassian ship's presence and informs Sisko. They continue to communicate
with Sisko, indicating that he is trapped in the past, at the moment in time when his wife was killed aboard the
Saratoga. Realizing the pain he has been holding all these years, the aliens guide him through the circumstances
leading up to his wife's death and help him to finally grieve for his loss and to realize that it is time to let
go of her.
Aboard Deep Space Nine, Major Kira is contacted by Cardassian Captain Gul Jasad, who accuses the station crew of
destroying the missing Cardassian ship. Kira denies the accusation, but Jasad does not believe her and attacks
the station. The battle escalates and the space station is damaged. Kira decides that it is time to surrender when
the wormhole suddenly reappears, and Sisko's Runabout tows the Cardassian ship out of danger. The battle swiftly
ends, and the Bajorans are able to lay claim to the wormhole.
Later, a healed Sisko briefs Picard about the events of the past few days. Picard compliments Sisko on a job well
done, for he has put Bajor on the map and that the station will soon become a leading center of commerce and exploration,
as well as one of the Federation’s most impotant posts. Sisko decides to keep his post on Deep Space Nine, now
that he has grieved for his wife and looks forward to his new future aboard the station.
